Alflorex is one of the most popular gut health supplements in Ireland. It was developed by scientists in Cork and is now sold in pharmacies across Ireland and the UK. We're asked about it at the counter every week, so here are clear answers to the most common questions.
What is Alflorex?
Alflorex is a food supplement containing one specific strain of live bacteria: Bifidobacterium longum 35624. Bacteria are named by their genus, species and strain, and the strain matters. Different strains behave differently, so one live-culture supplement is not the same as another.
Because Alflorex is a food supplement, not a medicine, it is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any illness.
The Alflorex range
- Alflorex Precision Biotics Capsules: the original once-a-day adult capsule.
- Alflorex Chewable Tablets: an option if you don't like swallowing capsules.
- Alflorex Dual Action: combines the bacterial strain with additional ingredients.
- Alflorex Immune: a formula with added vitamins.
- Alflorex Children Sachets: a powder made for children; check the pack for the age range.
How to take Alflorex
The adult capsule is usually taken once a day, at any time, with or without food. Swallow it with water. Don't take more than the pack recommends.
Live-culture supplements are usually taken daily for several weeks. Give it the time the pack suggests before deciding whether it suits you. Store it as the label says.
Can you get Alflorex on prescription?
Usually not. Alflorex is a food supplement, so it is not normally covered by the medical card (GMS) or the Drug Payment Scheme. You can buy it over the counter in pharmacies and online.
Can you take Alflorex when pregnant?
If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, talk to your GP, midwife or pharmacist before starting any supplement. They know your history and can check it is right for you. You may also find our pregnancy essentials checklist useful.
When to see your GP instead
Ongoing tummy symptoms should be checked by a doctor before you rely on supplements. See your GP if you have:
- Blood in your stools or black stools
- Unexplained weight loss
- A change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, especially if you are over 50
- Bloating that is persistent or getting worse
- Severe pain, fever or vomiting
Other gut health options
Alflorex is one of several live-culture supplements we stock. Our guide to choosing a probiotic compares the main types, and you can browse our full probiotics range or our bloating and gas products.
Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake. Always read the label, and ask your pharmacist if you're unsure whether a product suits you.
