Arret 2mg Hard Capsules is a pharmacy-only anti-diarrhoeal medicine containing Loperamide Hydrochloride 2mg per capsule. It is used alongside appropriate fluid and electrolyte replacement for the short-term management of sudden, acute diarrhoea in adults and children aged 12 years and over.

How to Use

For adults and children over 12 years: Take 2 capsules initially, followed by 1 capsule after each further episode of diarrhoea. Do not exceed 5 capsules in any 24-hour period. Swallow capsules whole with a drink of water.

Arret treats the symptoms of diarrhoea rather than the underlying cause. Fluid lost through diarrhoea should be replaced by drinking adequate liquids; oral rehydration therapy may be appropriate to replace lost fluids and salts. If diarrhoea has not improved within 24 hours, seek medical advice.

Warnings

• Do not give to children under 12 years of age.
• Do not take if you have severe diarrhoea following antibiotics, acute dysentery with blood in the stools and a high temperature, a flare-up of ulcerative colitis, constipation or a swollen abdomen, or certain bacterial infections or bowel obstruction.
• Stop taking if constipation or abdominal swelling develops.
• Do not exceed the recommended dose. Serious heart problems, including abnormal heart rhythms, have been reported when excessive amounts of loperamide have been taken.
• Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have liver problems, are pregnant, or take medicines including ritonavir, quinidine, itraconazole, ketoconazole, gemfibrozil or oral desmopressin.
• Do not take while breastfeeding, as small amounts of loperamide may pass into breast milk.
• May occasionally cause dizziness, tiredness or sleepiness; if affected, do not drive or operate machinery.
• Contains lactose — consider in people with certain sugar intolerances.
