Canesten 500mg Pessary treats the internal part of vaginal thrush with a single dose. The pessary contains 500mg of clotrimazole, an antifungal that works on the yeast causing the infection, and it comes with an applicator so it can be placed correctly. One pessary is the whole course - there is nothing to remember the next day.
Key Features
- Single-dose treatment for internal vaginal thrush.
- Clotrimazole 500mg.
- Applicator included.
- Symptoms should settle within about three days.
What Is Canesten 500mg Pessary Used For?
Canesten 500mg Pessary is used to treat vaginal thrush and should only be administered if your doctor has prescribed it.
The active substance is clotrimazole. Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called azoles and is an antifungal agent, which fights the cause of infections such as vaginal thrush.
How to Use
Use at bedtime, so it stays in place overnight. The applicator should be used to insert the pessary into the vagina as high as possible, preferably before going to sleep at night for convenient and comfortable treatment.
- Wash your hands before removing the foil from the blister pack.
- Remove the applicator from the packaging and pull out the plunger until it stops.
- Remove the pessary from the foil blister pack and place firmly into the applicator. Squeeze the holder lightly at both sides. The pessary fits tightly into the applicator and needs to be squeezed into the holder to about 1cm.
- Lying on your back with your knees bent, insert the applicator as deeply as is comfortable into the vagina, then press the plunger slowly until it stops.
- Remove the applicator and dispose of it. Wash your hands again.
Some white residue the next day is normal - a panty liner helps. One pessary is the full course. Your symptoms should settle within about three days. If you are no better after 7 days, see your doctor.
Who Should Not Use It
Do not use this pessary if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the ingredients, during your period, or during the first three months of pregnancy.
Warnings and Precautions
Clotrimazole damages latex - it can reduce the effectiveness of condoms and diaphragms, so use another form of contraception for at least five days after treatment. Avoid sex while you are being treated, and do not use tampons, spermicides or other vaginal products at the same time.
See your doctor rather than treating this yourself if:
- This is your first episode of thrush or you are unsure it is thrush.
- You have had more than two episodes in the last six months.
- You are under 16 or over 60.
- You have had a sexually transmitted infection or been exposed to one.
- You have abnormal bleeding, blood-stained discharge, ulcers, blisters or sores, a foul-smelling discharge, pain passing urine, lower tummy pain or a fever.
Do not use it during your period.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Do not use it in the first three months of pregnancy. Later in pregnancy, and while breastfeeding, use it only on the advice of your doctor or midwife - and tell them you are pregnant, as the applicator may not be suitable.
Possible Side Effects
Mild burning or irritation just after use is the commonest, and usually settles. Vaginal discomfort, redness, swelling, itching, peeling skin, light bleeding or lower tummy pain can occur. Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you develop a rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or feel faint.
