Capasal Therapeutic Shampoo is a medicated shampoo formulated to treat dry, scaly and itchy scalp conditions, including seborrhoeic dermatitis, severe dandruff (pityriasis capitis), psoriasis and cradle cap. In Ireland, it is an authorised pharmacy-only medicine that does not require a prescription.

Its triple-active formula combines Salicylic Acid, Coconut Oil and Distilled Coal Tar to loosen scales, soften and moisturise the scalp, and help relieve itching. The shampoo is golden-brown and has a characteristic coal-tar odour.

Active Ingredients

• Salicylic Acid 0.5% w/w: a mild keratolytic active that helps loosen and remove scales and flaky skin from the scalp.
• Coconut Oil 1.0% w/w: an emollient that helps soften, moisturise and lubricate dry, scaly areas of the scalp.
• Distilled Coal Tar 1.0% w/w: provides anti-pruritic (anti-itch) and keratoplastic activity, helping manage itching and abnormal scaling associated with certain scalp conditions.

How to Use

Wet the hair thoroughly. Massage a small amount of Capasal directly into the scalp using your fingertips. Irish prescribing information suggests approximately a two-euro-coin-sized amount for short hair; adjust the amount according to hair length and thickness.

Leave on for a few minutes, then wash out thoroughly. Use once or twice weekly until the condition improves, followed by occasional use if necessary. Keep the shampoo and lather away from the eyes. Follow the directions on your pack or those given by your pharmacist or doctor.
