Kaltostat Sterile Alginate Dressing 5cm x 5cm
Kaltostat is a sterile, haemostatic alginate dressing composed of sodium and calcium salts of alginic acid (80:20 ratio). When in contact with wound exudate or body fluids, the fibres absorb liquid, swell, and form a soft gel that overlays the wound — creating a moist micro-environment that supports healing. Suitable for heavily exuding chronic and acute wounds.
Key Features
-
Alginate gel-forming technology — absorbs exudate and forms a moist wound environment to facilitate healing
-
Haemostatic properties — helps control bleeding at the wound site
-
Sterile single-use dressing — individually wrapped in a peel pouch, sterilised by gamma irradiation
-
Can be cut or folded to fit the shape of the wound
-
Maximum wear time: Up to 7 days (change sooner if saturated or strike-through occurs)
Indications
Suitable for heavily exuding wounds including:
- Leg ulcers (venous, arterial, and diabetic)
- Pressure sores
- Fungating carcinomas
- Donor sites and abrasions
- Lacerations and post-surgical wounds
Not suitable for very dry wounds or wounds covered with hard black necrotic tissue.
How to Use
- Cut or fold the dressing to the shape of the wound and apply directly to the wound surface
- Secure with an appropriate secondary dressing (absorbent pad for heavy exudate; semipermeable film for lighter exudate)
- To remove, use forceps or gloved fingers — soak with sterile normal saline first if required
- Change daily in early stages or when maximum absorbency is reached; reduce frequency as healing progresses
- Do not leave in place for more than 7 days without changing
Cautions
- Do not use if known sensitivity to Kaltostat or its components
- For infected wounds, change daily and use a non-adhesive secondary dressing; initiate adjuvant therapy as appropriate
Always follow the instructions provided with the dressing or seek advice from a healthcare professional.
