Phenergan Elixir (Promethazine Hydrochloride) is a trusted pharmacy medicine used to relieve nausea, vomiting, travel sickness, allergy symptoms and short-term sleeplessness. It works by blocking histamine — the natural substance your body produces during an allergic reaction — and acts directly on the brain to promote calm and relaxation.

What It's Used For:

  • Nausea and vomiting (including travel sickness and motion sickness)
  • Allergic conditions such as hay fever, hives and nettle rash
  • Short-term sedation in children aged 6 years and above

Key Benefits:

  • Relieves nausea and vomiting from travel, illness or post-surgery
  • Reduces allergy symptoms including itching, hives and rhinitis
  • Helps with motion sickness during car, boat or plane travel
  • Fast-acting for quick relief

Pack Size: 150ml bottle

How to Take Phenergan

For your safety, always follow the recommended dosage and do not exceed the stated dose or use for more than 7 days without pharmacist or GP advice. Use a medicinal 5ml spoon for accurate measurement.

For Allergic Conditions (Hay Fever, Rashes, Hives):

  • Adults (including Elderly): 25mg (five 5ml spoonfuls) once daily at bedtime. May be increased to a maximum of 25mg three times daily if required.
  • Children (6–10 years): 10mg–25mg (two to five 5ml spoonfuls) at bedtime, OR 5mg–10mg (one to two 5ml spoonfuls) twice daily. Maximum daily dose: 25mg.

For Travel Sickness (Prevention of Nausea/Vomiting):

  • Adults (including Elderly): 25mg (five 5ml spoonfuls) the night before travel. May be repeated after 6–8 hours if required.
  • Children (6–10 years): 10mg (two 5ml spoonfuls) the night before travel. May be repeated after 6–8 hours if required.

Who Should Not Take Phenergan

Do not take Phenergan if you or your child:

  • Are under 6 years of age
  • Are allergic to promethazine or any listed ingredients
  • Have taken MAOIs (antidepressants) within the past 14 days
  • Have asthma, epilepsy, heart problems, or severe liver/kidney disease
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor advises otherwise

Avoid alcohol while taking Phenergan as it can increase drowsiness.

Possible Side Effects

Most people tolerate Phenergan well when used correctly.

Common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Dry mouth or blurred vision
  • Constipation or mild stomach upset

Serious but rare effects include:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Irregular heartbeat or yellowing of the skin/eyes (liver problems)

Avoid driving or operating machinery if drowsy. Avoid prolonged sun exposure — Phenergan can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Storage

  • Keep out of sight and reach of children
  • Use within one month of opening

Pharmacist Advice

At Ballyduff Pharmacy, our pharmacists can recommend Phenergan for the short-term relief of allergy symptoms and travel sickness in adults and children aged 6 years and over.

Because Phenergan can cause drowsiness, it's best taken at night if used for allergies, or before travel to prevent motion sickness.
