Medicinal Treatment for Female-Pattern Hair Loss

Regaine for Women Extra Strength Scalp Foam is an Irish-authorised medicinal treatment for female-pattern hereditary hair thinning and hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Each gram of foam contains 50mg Minoxidil (5% w/w), which acts on hair follicles to help stimulate hair regrowth.

The lightweight, unscented cutaneous foam is applied directly to the scalp once daily. Hair growth may become evident after around 12 weeks; continued use is needed to maintain regrowth. One 60g can provides approximately two months of treatment.

Active Ingredient

Minoxidil 5% w/w (50mg per gram of foam): the active medicinal ingredient used to treat female-pattern androgenetic alopecia and promote hair regrowth by acting on hair follicles.

Other ingredients

  • Ethanol: helps deliver Minoxidil in the topical foam formulation.
  • Glycerol: a humectant that helps retain moisture within the formulation.
  • Cetyl Alcohol and Stearyl Alcohol: fatty alcohols that help provide the foam’s consistency and stability.

How to use

Ensure the hair and scalp are completely dry. Dispense approximately half a capful of foam (1g) onto a clean, non-absorbent surface. Part the hair to expose thinning areas, then gently massage the foam over affected areas on the top of the scalp. Use once daily and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Do not exceed 1g per day.

Hair growth may take around 12 weeks to become apparent. The Irish prescribing information advises discontinuing if there is no improvement after 24 weeks (6 months). Continued treatment is required to maintain regrowth.

Important information

This is a medicine, not a cosmetic hair-growth serum. The leaflet advises consulting a doctor before starting treatment so other causes of hair loss, such as underlying disease, nutritional problems or hormonal disorders, can be excluded.
