Burn Care & Management
A burn is a thermal injury to the skin caused by exposure to heat, chemicals, or physical agents, and is typically classified by depth — from first-degree (superficial) to second-degree (partial thickness) and third-degree (full thickness) burns. Effective management of burns, particularly partial thickness injuries, requires dressings that promote healing, protect against infection, and maintain a moist wound environment. Our range of burn dressings is designed to provide optimal comfort and support throughout the healing process.
The best dressing for a burn depends on the depth of the burn, location, and amount of exudate (fluid). Here’s a breakdown of commonly used and effective burn dressings, grouped by type and purpose:
Superficial (First-Degree) Burns
These affect only the top layer of skin (epidermis). The goal is to soothe pain and protect the area.
Recommended dressings:
Hydrogel dressings (e.g. ActiFormCool, Intrasite Gel) – provide cooling relief and maintain moisture.
Silicone-coated dressings (e.g. Mepitel®) – non-adherent and protect new skin.
Film dressings (e.g. Opsite Flexifix, Tegaderm) – transparent and breathable; useful once the burn is closed.
Partial Thickness (Second-Degree) Burns
These involve both the epidermis and part of the dermis. The goal is to absorb exudate, reduce infection risk, and support healing.
Recommended dressings:
Hydrofiber dressings with silver (e.g. AQUACEL® Ag BURN) – absorb exudate, release ionic silver to prevent infection, and form a soft gel that conforms to the wound.
Alginate dressings (e.g. Kaltostat, Algisite M) – excellent absorption for moderate to heavy exudate.
Hydrocolloid dressings (e.g. DuoDERM®) – maintain a moist environment and promote autolytic debridement.
Foam dressings with silver (e.g. Mepilex® Ag, Allevyn Ag) – absorbent, antimicrobial, and cushioning for comfort.
Full Thickness (Third-Degree) Burns
These affect all skin layers and often require surgical or specialist management. Dressings are used to protect the wound and control infection before grafting or further treatment.
Recommended dressings:
Silver or antimicrobial foam dressings (e.g. Mepilex® Ag, AQUACEL® Ag Foam) – reduce infection risk and manage exudate.
Charcoal dressings with silver (e.g. Actisorb Silver 220) – control odour and bacteria.
